South Italy Adventure Engagement Session
Sunrise Adventure Session in Matera, Italy
Heather + Mike
We first met Heather and Mike when we traveled to Iceland to capture their elopement back in 2017. There, we spent four days with them, exploring all that Iceland had to offer. We hiked, slept in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, drove along bumpy dirt roads, and walked along black sand beaches. Since their elopement adventure, we’ve started taking yearly trips together. In 2018, we road-tripped across Greece as well as visited their home in Minneapolis. Now, in 2019, we decided to explore the South of Italy together.
We met up in Rome, taking time to see the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and hopping around the city to the best gelato shops. Then, we rented a car and hit the road, stopping at Pompeii and Positano along the way. But the city we were all most excited about was a little hidden gem in Basilicata.
Our first evening was spent exploring the city and planning Heather and Mike’s Adventure Session the next morning. The city isn’t too crowded during the day, but we all agreed to get up for sunrise the next morning. We love photographing couples during sunrise because no one else is outside and the light is beautiful.
We met Heather and Mike outside of our hotel around 6 am and made our way through the city. We had the entire city to ourselves and it would be a couple of hours before any other tourists made their way outside. The four of us explored every nook and cranny of the city before buying some croissants and other pastries from a small bakery for breakfast. After breakfast, we hopped in our tiny rental car and drove to the opposite side of the gorge to get a grander view of the city.
The entire day, Heather kept noting that this would be the perfect place for an elopement. And we couldn’t agree more! Around every corner is a view more amazing than the last, we were constantly in awe at the old brick buildings and the beautiful views. We can easily imagine a ceremony on a private balcony or even in front of an ancient cave. The rest of the elopement day could be spent exploring and eating gelato (and maybe some pizza or pasta).
