Slovenia is tucked away between Italy and Croatia in Central Europe, and it sure is beautiful! As soon as you cross the border from Italy into Slovenia, you are greeted by the most incredible mountains! We visited in early March, so the landscape was still covered in snow. We would love to return in the summer to see the forests in bloom.
We based ourselves in Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital, and then took day trips into the mountains. Ljubljana itself is a beautiful city. We loved exploring the cobblestone streets of Old Town, eating in small restaurants, and climbing up to Ljubljana Castle.
From the moment we first saw photos of Slovenia's famous Lake Bled, we fell in love. We were so excited to make the trip into the Julian Alps to visit. We walked along the edge of the lake and ate Bled's famous cream cake in a cafe right next to the water. Because of the weather, we decided to skip the boat ride to the church on the island, but we did enjoy looking at it from the shore. Perched on a cliff above the lake is a medieval castle which adds to the fairy tale setting. Next, we drove to Lake Bohinj which we had completely to ourselves. We walked through the snow on the shore and watched the ducks.
