Snowy October Elopement in Telluride

Macy + Meghan

On the morning of Macy and Meghan’s elopement, we met with them at the edge of town in complete darkness. As we made our way out of town and up the winding dirt roads to the location they had chosen for their first look, we couldn’t help but notice the fierceness of the winds. It shook our cars and blew the trees.

Once we arrived at their first look location, the winds howled and we shivered in the cold. Macy and Meghan bravely changed into their wedding attire and then had their first look next to a small alpine lake. They snuggled into each other to keep warm. We hurried back to the cars and continued on our adventure.

As we started our bumpy drive higher into the mountains, we could see some thick clouds coming in behind us. Within minutes, the snow started to fall, and it wasn’t normal snow. It was the kind of snow that looks like Dippin’ Dots, which hurt when the wind pelts you with them. We slowly and carefully made our way through the snow to an alpine lake. But by this point, we knew that we needed to turn around. As the snow continued, none of us wanted to risk getting stuck.

So we retraced our steps and got to a lower elevation. The wind was still blowing at full force and the temperatures were still around freezing. Their original ceremony plan was not going to work. We continued down the mountain with a backup ceremony location in mind, but at the last moment decided to take a different route instead. We had driven this route with another couple earlier that year, but hadn’t completed the trail. Based on what we knew of the trail, we thought it might be perfect. The road was highly forested, but as we rounded a corner, the most beautiful meadow came into view. Lisa hopped out of the Jeep to see what Macy and Meghan thought and Meghan’s eyes were lit up. This was even better than the planned ceremony spot!

Their vows were heartfelt, beautiful, all mixed in with a little bit of humor. As they said their vows to each other, the clouds moved in from over the nearby mountains, dropping a light snow on them. It added a little bit more magic into their ceremony! Their first kiss was filled with excitement, joy, and relief that we had (in a way) conquered the weather.

In true Colorado fashion, we experienced warm sunshine at their next location. This was much appreciated after a very chilly morning. After a stop in town for lunch and another adjustment to their locations to avoid another storm, we headed to one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the San Juan Mountains.

As we climbed up the rocks to the base of the waterfall, it was hard to tell if we were getting sprayed with rain or waterfall spray. Macy and Megan attached “Just Married” signs to their backpacks and Meghan even tucked her bouquet in her backpack. They held each other close and admired the magic of the fog surrounding us as well as the towering waterfall.

We ended the night at a cabin they rented. It’s one of our favorite cabins in the area and it sits on its own private lake. They had their first dance as the snow fell and then retreated inside the cabin for a cozy night by the fire.

Macy and Meghan’s elopement day had a lot of unexpected pivots due to the weather, but it ended up being incredible!

This elopement took place on Ute and Pueblo Land.
