Moab Elopement at Dead Horse Point State Park
Moab Sunrise to Sunset Elopement in Arches National Park
Kari + Ty
Last year, Kari and Ty visited 18 National Parks together. Toward the end of the year, they got engaged, and spent the next 5 months planning a traditional wedding. But after many jokes about running away to elope, they finally decided to do it. On their big cross-country adventure, they visited Zion, the Great Sand Dunes, Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Tetons, and even Rocky Mountain National Park. But Moab was the place that they couldn’t get out of their heads. They pivoted the vision for their wedding day to eloping in the desert with their immediate families.
Kari and Ty’s elopement day started at sunrise. They stayed at Under Canvas Moab and had their first look in front of their tent. Slowly, their families arrived and it was time to gather up their belongings and head to the ceremony! After debating between having their ceremony at Canyonlands National Park and at Dead Horse Point State Park, they decided on Dead Horse Point. This is one of our favorite spots in all of Moab, and it’s amazing at sunrise or sunset! The Park has a few different ceremony sites to choose from, and the spot they chose requires a short hike. So Kari, Ty, and all of their guests hiked single-file through the rocky landscape, admiring the canyon views along the way.
They gathered along the edge of the cliff, with expansive canyon views stretching behind them for miles. Kari’s brother officiated the ceremony and then Kari and Ty exchanged some of the most beautiful vows. And while not everyone would want to admit it, we can confirm that everyone was crying. Even if a few of them were crying and laughing simultaneously. After Kari and Ty were pronounced as husband and wife, they had one of the best dip kisses we’ve ever seen! They celebrated with hugs all around and then Kari and Ty explored a little while their families set up a picnic. Kari and Ty were fearless as they climbed on the rocks and looked out at the tiny Jeeps off-roading over 1,500 feet below us.
Their picnic was so cute! The table was decorated with a tablecloth and a gorgeous burnt orange table runner. There were florals and a sign reading “Love You More”. For food, they set up delicious charcuterie boards with crackers, meats, cheese, pickles, nuts, fruits, and veggies. They even had cake for dessert. They gathered around the table together and ate while we parted ways for the afternoon.
While it’s quite the commitment to wake up before sunrise and then stay out after sunset, it’s one of the best ways to take advantage of the best light of the day! So later that afternoon, we met back up with Kari and Ty in the Windows Section of Arches National Park. During the afternoon break, Kari put her hair up and changed into a second wedding dress. We hiked from arch to arch and were even chased down by a little girl who thought Kari looked like a princess (which yes, she did!).
To cap off their elopement day, we hiked to a lesser-known Arch near Moab. We love hiking with our couples because it allows us to get to know them even better, so we talked all about Kari and Ty’s travels, as well as Kari’s job as a nurse and Ty’s job as a real estate photographer. Shortly before sunset, we made it to the arch. There, Kari and Ty had their first dance, complete with another impressive dip kiss! We hiked back in the dark with lanterns and headlamps. As we neared the trailhead, we were met by a couple who had seen us begin the hike, but were worried when we didn’t come back before dark. We thanked them and felt a deep sense of appreciation for them looking out for us. But when you see the last photo of the day you’ll understand why the four of us stayed out until after dark!
This elopement took place on Ute Land.
