Elopement in the North Cascade Mountains of Washington

Jon + Sam

Sam and Jon met back in 2014 when Jon was Sam’s lifeguard instructor. After a summer of friendship and romance, they parted ways. Life went on for both of them until they finally reconnected with the intention of remaining just friends. But as they started to spend more and more time together, it was hard to deny that maybe they should give their relationship a real chance. They got engaged in 2020 and quickly knew that a traditional wedding wasn’t for them. They wanted to do something unique, something that neither of them had done before. They also wanted to prioritize quality time with each other and their guests. When Sam and Jon imagined their elopement location, they knew that they wanted to elope in the mountains. After considering Iceland and Colorado, they ended up falling in love with Washington.

Washington has so many gorgeous mountainous areas to choose from! After much thought, Sam and Jon decided to get married in Mt. Baker National Forest. The initial plan was to have a mountaintop ceremony with their families and then go on a 6.5-mile hike afterward. But as their wedding date approached, the road up to Artist Point was still closed after it got damaged the previous Fall. Sam and Jon had to decide between having their families hike up to the top with them or having their ceremony at a different, more easily accessible location. Fortunately, Sam and Jon were flexible and we agreed on a new ceremony location! Then we could hike up to Artist Point afterward.

On the day of Sam and Jon’s elopement, we met them at their ceremony site. Jon and their guests gathered at a lakeside overlook while Sam walked herself down the aisle. The week of their elopement was very hot in Washington and that didn’t help the nearby wildfires, so Mount Shuksan was enveloped in smoke. Even with the smoke, Sam and Jon’s ceremony was incredible and we had so much fun spending the day exploring with them! Their friend officiated the ceremony for them and their families and friends gathered around them in support. After the ceremony, they celebrated with hugs and champagne before saying goodbye to their guests.

The first priority after the ceremony was lunch. We chose a picnic table and Sam and Jon unwrapped a beautiful charcuterie board that they put together themselves. It looked delicious, with meats, cheeses, bread, strawberries, jello, and even chocolate. Once we were all re-fueled, we started our hike. We climbed up and down rocks, crossed stone bridges, stood in awe at the bright blue alpine lake, and eventually found ourselves at the very top of Artist Point. Along the way, we were lucky enough to witness Sam and Jon interact with each other, and they are so cute together! Everyone deserves a partner who looks at them the way Jon looks at Sam, it’s seriously magical. Oh, and somewhere along the way, Sam took her hiking boots off, which had to be documented, of course. Sam and Jon capped off their elopement day with a mountaintop first dance before returning to town for a pizza dinner with their closest family and friends!

This elopement took place on Nooksack, Coast Salish, and Nlaka’pamux Land.
